About us

Cosmic Coffee Company was started in 2009 in Honolulu HI and relocated to Santa Clara CA in 2012. All our coffees are purchased and imported through Organic Products Trading Company with the exception of the Maui Mokka which we purchase directly from the growers. Our coffees are organic, Fair Trade, Certified Rain Forrest Alliance and some are Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center certified as bird friendly shade grown.

We believe in paying a living wage to the farmers. They work incredibly hard in some very harsh conditions. In order for us to succeed we need to make sure the farmers succeed. We use compostable bags and recyclable glass. Yes, it’s more expensive but there is only one planet Earth and it is irreplaceable. We support the Café Femenino Foundation and purchase green coffee from Café Femenino farms. To learn more about Café Femenino and what they do for women coffee farmers visit them at  http://www.coffeecan.org/about-us.

Carlos, the man behind the coffee, is into the science of coffee and expresses his passion for it though the art of roasting and brewing. He takes the time to develop a unique roast profile for every varietal of coffee he roasts. This often means roasting several test batches of the same beans. Coffee beans have different sizes, density and moisture content depending on the variety, age, where and how the beans were grown and processed. Keeping the profile consistent from batch to batch can also depend on the weather; heat, humidity and cold temperatures can also affect the roast. This is just the basics but you get the idea. In 2009 Carlos was the first barista in the state of Hawaii to become an International Academy of Specialty Coffee certified barista. He started roasting coffee in 2007. He continues to educate himself in all things coffee; earning certificates from The Specialty Coffee Association of America in such areas as Golden Cup Standards, Green Coffee Roasting, Craft Roasting and Identifying Defects in Green and Roasted Coffee. Carlos also handcrafts the water for the Dark Matter Cold Brew. He entirely build-out the coffee bar. You can check out his Instagram page @ cosmiccoffeeco_ceo.

Our coffee

Organic Products Trading Company works directly with coffee farmers to develop and import high quality certified organic green specialty coffee. Long term commitments by OPTCO and the continuing work and training of our growers, provides the necessary foundation for the sustainability of the coffee projects. Increasing coffee quality for our customers and improving the quality of life for our farmers, their families, communities, and the environment that surrounds them is the mission of Organic Products Trading Company.

Café Femenino  is a social program for women coffee producers in rural communities around the world. More than 1,500 women in Bolivia, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru are active in the project to achieve empowerment, build social and support networks, and earn incomes through the production and sale of the Café Femenino Coffee. The success of the Project initiated the creation of The Café Femenino Foundation, which provides grants to select programs and projects that enhance the lives of women and their families in coffee growing communities around the world.

MauiGrown™ Coffee is the grower of Ka’anapali Estate Coffee located on the West Maui Mountains near the historic town of Lahaina. The 500-acre estate grows several varieties of Arabica coffees to suit a multitude of palettes. The theory of “quality from seed to cup” best describes the planning and operation of MauiGrown™ Coffee. From 1988 through 2001, the farm was operated by Kaanapali Estate Coffee, a diversified Agriculture project of Pioneer Mill Sugar Company. As director of Agricultural research for Pioneer Mill at the time, James (Kimo) Falconer was instrumental in the genesis of this coffee. Falconer’s dream was to revive the coffee farm. His hard work and dedication led to the establishment of MauiGrown Coffee, Inc. in 2003 and its first crop in 2004.

Daterra Coffee, Quality and sustainability is their passion. Technology, research and attention to the environment during coffee production have led Daterra to be known as one of the best coffee producers in the world. Daterra coffee blends have been the choice of barista champions around the world. Daterra was Brazil’s first sustainable coffee farm. In 1999 Daterra became ISO 14001 certified and in 2003 became Rainforest Alliance certified, another first for Brazil.
